Driver Education - Creating Safe Drivers
DRIVER EDUCATION has been and will continue to be a major concern for the public at large, the new driver, the parent and guardians, and other members of the Highway Transportation System. There is danger ahead and you can't miss the warning signs:
- Young drivers are three times more likely to be in a crash than the rest of the driving population
- Motor Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death in young people ages 16-24
- The majority of crashes occur during the first six months of licensed driving
The lack of training and proper driver education offerings has created "a public health crisis", accoring to a Special State Advisory Panel of Driver Education Availability and Curriculum Enhancement, appointed last year by the governor and the legislature. "It's become a safety issue for the teen drivers, as well as the motorists who share the road with them," said State Education commissioner Richard Mills.
